By Treezer Michelle Atieno

In a bid to combat unemployment and empower the youth with valuable digital skills, the County Government of Kisumu partnered with the Ajira Digital Programme, to host a two-day training event at the Rotary on the 11th and 12th of September 2023. The initiative’s main aim is to create jobs and economic opportunities for the youth of Kisumu County.

The comprehensive training program covered a wide range of digital skills, tools, and mentorship opportunities crucial for online work in today’s digital age. Importantly, the program was designed to prioritize women and youth from all corners of the county, recognizing the importance of gender balance in promoting digital empowerment both economically and socially.

The Ajira Digital Training platform, which has been gaining traction nationwide, focuses on equipping participants with high-demand digital skills that significantly enhance their employment prospects and income-generating potential. Furthermore, it guides participants in the development of socially responsible digital start-ups, fostering an environment that nurtures leadership and entrepreneurial skills, ultimately driving change and innovation in the region.

The training event was graced by esteemed figures in the field, including the County Director for ICT, Ms. Maureen Awuor, and the Ajira Regional Coordinator, Mr. Cliff Orina. Their presence underscored the importance of this initiative in addressing the challenges of unemployment among the youth in Kisumu County.

The impact of such training programs is already evident as over 70 participants from Kisumu County benefited from this recent event. These young individuals are now equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the digital job market, providing them with a competitive edge in today’s technology-driven world.

As a result of the Ajira Digital Initiative, participants are not only gaining access to employment opportunities but are also empowered to explore entrepreneurship and innovation in the digital space. This not only fosters economic growth but also creates a sense of self-reliance and self-sufficiency among the youth.

The collaboration between the County Government of Kisumu and the Ajira Digital Programme is likely to be a game-changer for the youth in the region. By providing essential digital skills, promoting gender inclusivity, and nurturing entrepreneurial spirit, this initiative is not only going to create jobs but also shape a brighter and more prosperous future for Kisumu County’s youth. As the program continues to expand its reach, it holds the promise of transforming the employment landscape and driving innovation in Kenya’s digital economy.
