On July 2, 2026, Mzalendo Trust visited Mpeketoni for an inspiring engagement with the youth of Lamu West. Hosted by the area MP, Mr. Stanley Muthama, the event served as a platform to recognize and celebrate the dedication of local citizens toward community development.
The event brought together various local organizations, including Jukwaa la Vijana, Hindi One, Manda Youth, and Lamu Arts and Theatre Alliance. Representing the MP, his communication officer, Mr. Philip Kabugi, joined the discussion alongside Mr. Jeff and Ms. Michelle from Mzalendo Trust, who led practical sessions on how young people can better utilize their creative talents in the modern economy.
Giving Power to the Creators
During the session, the youth voiced the challenges they face in the creative sector. A representative from Jukwaa la Vijana shared a common frustration:
“I have watched talented artists here struggle for years without making it. We are now content creators, but we need the right tools like cameras and stands to produce professional work and reach the next level.”
In response, Mr. Philip Kabugi encouraged the youth to take ownership of their visibility. “You must be seen to be recognized,” he noted. “Use your social media platforms to showcase your talent, and stay ready, because digital hubs are being rolled out to provide the support you need.”
A Region-Wide Digital Transformation
The call for digital growth is backed by significant action from both levels of government. While the National Government has committed to establishing digital hubs nationwide, the County Government of Lamu, under the leadership of Governor Issa Timamy, has prioritized bringing these centers to every ward.
Lamu is already seeing major milestones:
1. Digital Hubs: Over 9 hubs have already been completed across the county.
2.Connectivity: Several free public Wi-Fi hotspots have been installed, supported by a multi-million shilling investment to keep the community connected.
3.Empowerment: Various digital programs are already active and helping young people build new skills.
This commitment is built into the future of the county. In the ADP of 2025/2026 Approved Budget (Page 55, under the department of Information, Communication & Technology, E-Government, and Citizen Participation), dedicated funds have been secured to ensure these projects continue to expand.
| County Public Wifi Hotspot Expansion | County wide | 5M |

Even when you check the approved 2026/2027 ADP budget on page 131, under Climate Change, ICT, E-Government, and Citizen Participation, the allocation is still there:
| Digital Literacy Training Programme | County Wide | 3M |

When those who had the opportunity to study at these hubs were asked about their experience during the meeting, they shared mixed feelings. Charles said, “The learning process is definitely good, and I am grateful. However, I just have the certificate now, and it is just sitting at home.”
Rehema added, “If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have learned computer skills; they have helped me a lot. I have received my certificate, and I am grateful, but I haven’t tried looking for a job yet.”
While many acknowledged that the hubs have been helpful in building their skills, the common sentiment was that these skills have not yet translated into job opportunities for them.
