Londiani, Kericho Residents and business owners in Londiani Town are raising concern over the deteriorating drainage situation, with poor drainage infrastructure making movement and business operations increasingly difficult especially during the rainy season making operations in town more difficult to carry out.
The problem is being experienced across different sections of the town, from the market area to shops and other business premises. During periods of rainfall, inadequate drainage channels leave water with limited paths to flow, resulting in stagnant water and muddy sections along busy areas. The situation has become a growing concern for traders, customers and pedestrians who depend on the town’s roads and walkways on a daily basis.
Business owners say the poor drainage is not only affecting accessibility but is also creating an unpleasant environment around their premises. Stagnant water can also contribute to poor sanitation and create conditions that may pose health concerns if the situation is left unattended. Kevin who is operating a Berber shop is rising concerns over the drainage systems saying that he undergoes problems where his shop usually floods when it rains.
A trader in the town, who requested anonymity, said the situation is becoming increasingly difficult for businesses. “The drainage problem has become unbearable. When it rains, water collects around the market and near the shops, making it difficult for customers to move around. We need the responsible authorities to take action before the situation gets worse,” the trader said.
Residents are now calling on the Kericho County Government and relevant departments to assess the drainage network across Londiani Town and undertake urgent improvements. They are particularly calling for the clearing of blocked drainage channels, construction or improvement of proper water channels and regular maintenance to prevent the problem from recurring.
The Kericho Youth Policy Network is calling for a comprehensive assessment of the town’s drainage system, including the clearing of blocked channels, repair of damaged sections and construction of proper drainage where necessary. According to Nichola Kirui from the organization is requesting the county government to kindly act on it because the residents are paying the taxes as well giving out the revenue to county. The network also urged the county government to establish regular maintenance of drainage channels rather than waiting for the problem to become critical.
The issue also raises questions about the town’s preparedness to handle stormwater as commercial activity continues to grow. For traders and residents, the message to the authorities is clear: Londiani Town needs a functional and well-maintained drainage system to protect businesses, improve sanitation and make the town safer and more accessible for everyone.
