Residents of Manyatta B in Kisumu County are voicing their concerns regarding the current state of the drainage system at Wandiege Primary School, which has been a significant challenge impacting both the learning environment and student activities. The community’s observations come in light of the recent weather conditions that have exacerbated flooding issues, consequently leading to delays in classes and a suspension of crucial extracurricular activities, such as Physical Education, Games, or even Assemblies.
Manyatta B is known for its swampy terrain, and while residents understand the challenges posed by the natural landscape, they feel that there has been insufficient attention from the relevant authorities to address the critical drainage concerns. Community members emphasize that “The existing drainages are inadequate, as they are unable to manage the volume of water during heavy rains, resulting in widespread flooding on school grounds. This situation forces students and staff to undertake time-consuming tasks of cleaning up the flooded classrooms and other facilities around the school, leading to interruptions in academic schedules and compromised learning experiences”.
“We are calling upon the Ministry of Education and the County Administration to prioritize the enhancement of the drainage systems not only within the school but also in the surrounding areas, as we believe that improving these systems will significantly contribute to creating a safer and more conducive learning environment for the students. It is acknowledged that the implications of inadequate drainage extend beyond the school’s premises, affecting the routes that students navigate to attend school daily. A perfect example is the Kuoyo junction route, which is always flooded”.
Concerns have also been raised about the preparedness of the school authorities regarding the continuing rains. “There have not been constructive measures taken to ensure that learners are protected from the floods. It’s still the same situation as before despite the severe effects of the flooding last year.” Stated Philemon Mwango.
In conclusion, residents of Manyatta B are earnestly appealing to the authorities to take action in upgrading the drainage facilities at Wandiege Primary School and in the surrounding community. The goal is to ensure not only the academic success of the students but also their safety and well-being. By addressing these infrastructure issues, authorities can demonstrate their commitment to fostering an environment where students can thrive, unhindered by the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions. The community stands united in its hope for a positive response and action from those in positions to effect change.
