US Official Demands Accountability from Kenya over Police Brutality

By Seliphar Machoni
Kenya faces potential repercussions for its handling of police brutality against peaceful
protesters and human rights abuses, actions that have drawn the attention of US President Joe
Biden’s administration.
A high-ranking US official has criticized the violent suppression of youth-led protests by the
Kenyan state, urging President William Ruto to take concrete action against rogue officers.
Uzra Zeya, the US State Department's Undersecretary for Civilian Security, Human Rights,
and Labor, addressed concerns during a press briefing at the US Embassy in Nairobi. She
emphasized that Washington is "vigilant" regarding Kenya's evolving situation.
"US security systems, partnerships, and cooperation programs are governed by US law,
which requires us to ensure our partners uphold human rights. We must be attentive to
allegations of gross human rights violations and demand accountability," Zeya stated.
Her comments came in response to questions about potential consequences if civil rights
abuses against protesters continue.
Zeya, who met with President Ruto on Tuesday, also engaged with Chief Justice Martha
Koome, Ruto's national security advisor Monica Juma, senior Interior Ministry officials, civil
society representatives, and young democratic reformers. She described these discussions as
"fruitful."
The remarks were timed just before 'Nane Nane' protests scheduled for today. Reports of
abductions involving youth and other citizens have heightened concerns within the Biden
administration.
Zeya’s visit reflects the increasing pressure on Ruto’s government regarding police violence
and abductions during the protests.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also called on President Ruto to ensure
accountability for crimes committed by law enforcement agents who have targeted protesters,
medical personnel, and journalists.
Nearly 60 Kenyans have died, over 400 injured, and more than 1,000 arrested during the
protests. Police have been accused of instigating violent clashes frequently.
Zeya's visit shows Washington’s concern over ongoing human rights violations under Ruto's
administration. The US Embassy has faced criticism for its perceived silence on these issues.

During her meetings, Zeya condemned violence against peaceful protesters, human rights
defenders, and journalists.
