In a landmark case that has shocked the nation, John Onyango, a man who raped a 27-
year-old mentally ill woman, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. This case
highlights the vulnerabilities faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Kenya,
particularly in the context of sexual violence. The victim, whose mental condition made
her particularly susceptible to abuse, was brutally violated by Onyango, who took
advantage of her inability to defend herself.
The case has brought to light the need for stronger protections for PWDs in Kenya, as
well as the importance of ensuring justice for victims of sexual violence. Advocacy
groups have pointed out that PWDs are often targeted by perpetrators who believe they
can commit such heinous acts with impunity. The sentencing of Onyango serves as a
reminder that justice is achievable. It also underscores the need for more
comprehensive measures to prevent such crimes.
Gen Z, along with human rights organizations, has been vocal in condemning this act
and calling for increased awareness and support for PWDs. They are urging the
government to implement policies that protect the rights of PWDs and ensure that those
who commit crimes against them face the full force of the law. The case of John
Onyango is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by PWDs in Kenya, and it has
galvanized calls for greater protection and respect for their rights.
