Rain Turns Kisumu’s Upgraded Roads into Mud Traps

By Joel Clinton

Residents in several neighborhoods within Kisumu County are expressing worries about the recent road upgrades. These works have left many areas in worse shape, especially during the rainy season. What was intended to improve access has instead created muddy and nearly impassable roads for vehicles and pedestrians.

Areas such as Kanyamedha, Nyamasaria, Nyalenda, Mamboleo, Riatt, and Ogango have seen unbearable conditions. Most of the roads that were recently graded and covered with murram have become thick mud after the heavy rains, making movement very difficult.

Motorcyclists, who are a key part of the local transport system, report being hit hardest. Many have had to completely avoid certain routes because of the slippery and uneven surfaces. Others risk getting stuck in the mud while carrying passengers.

Raphael, a resident of Kanyamedha, expressed his frustration with the timing and quality of the work.“The roads were already rough before, but at least we could pass. Now, after the so-called upgrade, the situation is worse. The murram was just poured and not properly compacted. With these rains, everything has turned into mud,” he said.

He added that vehicles now have a hard time reaching homes, and boda boda riders must charge higher fares due to the poor conditions.

Another resident, Miriam Achieng from Nyamasaria, criticized the contractors for what she called careless work.“This work was done at the wrong time. Everyone knows this is the rainy season. The soil is loose, and now the roads are slippery and dangerous. Some motorcycles even fall while trying to pass,” she lamented.

Residents say the bad state of the roads has also harmed small businesses, schoolchildren, and emergency access within the neighborhoods.

Many locals are urging Kisumu County officials to inspect the work and require contractors to properly compact the roads and install drainage systems to stop water from pooling on the surface.

“We are not against development,” Raphael added. “But if roads are upgraded, they should actually make life easier, not harder. Right now, these roads are a nightmare.”

Residents hope for urgent action before conditions worsen further as the rains continue.
