Peaceful Gen Z Protests Turn Violent in Kakamega County Amid Clashes with Goons and Police

By Seliphar Machoni
Generation Z protests, which have always been peaceful with a clear objective of seeking
accountability from the government, have turned into chaos and bloodshed.
Goons have taken over the peaceful demonstrations, turning them into looting, robbery, killings,
and even rape.
On Tuesday, July 16, in Kakamega County, what began as a peaceful protest quickly
degenerated into chaos as goons, Gen Z, and police clashed in the streets of Kakamega.
Goons armed with rungus and wearing masks had assembled along Kenyatta Avenue, but Gen Z
protesters confronted and disarmed them.
The thugs then launched into a widespread looting spree, pillaging stalls along Sudi Road, Canon
Awori Street, and the main market.
Nominated MCA Joel Okwako came to the defence of Gen Z, saying the protesters were
peaceful and defending them.
Police fired live ammunition and lobbed teargas to disperse the goons and protesters, preventing
further mayhem.
The officers protected the county headquarters and Governor Fernandes Barasa’s office, which
were vacant after the staff were told to stay home.
At least a dozen protesters were seriously injured, and traders were left counting their losses.
Waving placards and chanting slogans against the government, the protesters made their
demands.
Among the issues raised, Gen Z demanded that Governor Fernandes Barasa dismiss his entire
cabinet and chief officers, ensure there are enough drugs at county health facilities as patients are
forced to buy medications for treatment and stop rampant corruption in his government.
“We are tired of the rampant corruption and mismanagement. Our future is at stake,” said 22-
year-old Joyce Atieno, a university student who had joined the protest.

They also demanded that President William Ruto hold police officers accountable for killing
peaceful demonstrators and reconstitute a Cabinet that represents the face of Kenya and must be
of integrity.
School-going children were caught in the melee after police fired teargas at Mahiakalo Primary
School during lunch break.
