Construction of the Mbita-Awaya Bridge has officially kicked off in Railways Ward, Kisumu County. The contractor reported to the site yesterday to commence work on the Kshs 6 million bridge that will finally provide a permanent connection between the two areas.
For years, residents have voiced their frustration over countless delays and poor management of funds intended for this crucial project. The lack of a safe crossing has consistently put children and families in danger, especially during the rainy season when accessing Kudho School, Kamakowa Market, and Obunga Dispensary becomes perilous. “For us residents, this is fantastic news; accessing basic services like schools has been a struggle. Kids come from Manyatta and even Nyalenda to reach Kudho School, and the wooden bridges they’ve been using have been unsafe. With mud and rainwater, crossing became a true hazard. We just hope they will cover the whole river, just like what was done with River Auji, because the river has been eroding our lands and making crossing even riskier,” stated Philip Oloo.
Recently, the Dawn of Obunga Organization, a community-based group in Railways Ward, organized a public baraza with the backing of Siasa Place, an advocacy-supporting organization. This initiative sparked sustained advocacy, leading to online campaigns, formal letters, and relentless follow-ups with the Kisumu County administration to demand accountability and a permanent solution.
“Yesterday, the contractor officially reported to the site to begin construction on the bridge. No child should ever have to risk their life just to get to school. No family should be forced to rely on public resources that fail them due to mismanagement of our hard-earned taxes. Our efforts will not tire. We will closely monitor every stage of construction to ensure quality, transparency, and real value for every public shilling spent,” declared a statement from the Dawn of Obunga CBO on their social media platforms, affirming their commitment to overseeing the project at every stage to guarantee that public funds deliver substantial benefits and that the bridge serves the community as intended.
The construction of the Mbita-Awaya Bridge marks a pivotal step towards improving safety and accessibility for residents in Railways Ward.
