Kakamega Residents Decry Proposed Tax Hikes in Finance Bill 2024/25

By Seliphar Machoni
Residents of Kakamega County have expressed significant displeasure over the proposals in the
Finance Bill 2024/25.
They are particularly concerned about the proposed tax increases on basic commodities such as
milk and bread, which they say would disproportionately hurt the majority of Kenyans.
Roselida Shunali, a groundnut seller in Kakamega Town, voiced her frustration: "The Kenya
Kwanza government promised to uplift the lives of hustlers, but instead, we are suffering more.
We are overburdened by the high cost of basic commodities like bread and milk. Transport and
healthcare are other nightmares we don't want to talk about."
Victor Makhatse, a matatu driver, highlighted the impact of rising fuel prices, noting that the
number of passengers has reduced due to their eroded purchasing power. "If the vehicle
circulation tax of 2.5 per cent of the vehicle's value is introduced, it will compound an already
bad situation," he added.
Derrick, a youth in Kakamega, emphasized the need for greater awareness and affordability
regarding the new health insurance fund. “There is confusion with the new Social Health
Insurance Fund. Many citizens are not aware of it, and it is too expensive for the majority of
Kenyans,” he said.
Andanje, a shoe seller, echoed these sentiments, pointing out that business conditions are so poor
that many small and medium enterprise operators are unable to pay school fees or put food on
the table.
