The rise of organised gangs has cast a dark shadow over Kisumu city's once vibrant
streets, particularly affecting residents and traders who must navigate the city after
dark.
The menace of these gangs has become increasingly pronounced, with their
activities spreading from the city centre to neighbourhoods such as Kogony, other
areas around the Kisumu International Airport and as far as Maseno.
The gangs are known for their brutal tactics, often attacking individuals with pangas
and batons. Reports indicate that these attacks frequently occur in busy areas like
the Riat market, a place where both locals and traders are now at risk.
The violence has resulted in severe injuries and even fatalities, with several
residents recounting harrowing experiences of being assaulted without any
provocation.
Local traders, many of whom work late into the night, have been particularly hard-
hit. The fear of being targeted has led to a decrease in evening business activities,
affecting livelihoods and disrupting economic stability in the area.
Efforts by the police to address the situation have been met with limited success.
Despite a public promise by Kisumu County Police Commander Kizito Mutoro to
intensify patrols and crack down on criminal activities, the gangs continue to
operate with little interference.
Local authorities had pledged to bolster security measures and engage in a multi-
agency operation to curb the violence, but residents report that these promises
have yet to translate into tangible improvements in their daily lives.
