Governor Baraza’s Wajane initiative need to be upped.

By: David Jomo.

Kindness is a virtue praised by all, admired my many, seen as a weakling for some and
possessed by few. It might be the upbringing of the child but also as one grows up, there's a
need to take up responsibilities, and as a governor, this shifts to become a duty to be well
performed. It is good to point out that, it’s sometimes not the kindhearted that is seen on
forefront but also remaining relevant as a leader.
On 23rd June this year was one of its own kind. FCPA Fernandes Baraza OGW hosted all widows
from this great rural county of Kakamega. The event named 'Baraza na wajane,' was anticipated
for weeks and every widow looked forward towards this goodies day.
In this turf economic situation that a country is going through, being invited for a cup of tea is
of much value. Widows across the county were registered and transport was provided for them
as school buses were used to ferry them to the Approved school, the place for the event.
Buses were used to ferry the widows to the place that Sunday morning. Upon arriving,
speeches paved way for what meat that carried the day. For some, only fare was reimbursed,
others only received shopping while others received both. The criteria for such allocations
remain a mystery. Rice, sugar, cooking oil, soap, salt, tea leaves, a bread, soda and tissue paper
to me, that was quite charming.
Speaking to one widow after the event, I received her appraisal and frustrations. She
appreciated and complimented Governor Baraza's initiatives, " Huwa anatukumbuka sana. “On
the other side of the coin she also raised some lamentations that touched those on the ground.
Her first concern was on leadership locally. In her ward, the area coordinator of widows
happens to be someone with a husband. Well, can someone with a full family be able to
understand the roughness of lonely and cold old mamas? She lamented that in selection
process, the area coordinator was preferential to who shall go to visit Governor Baraza. Many
were left dissolute at the pickup point.
Her second concern was on the mass assembly of widows. A highly populated county brings
with it a high number of widows. Wouldn't it be wise enough for the Governor walking around
in each sub-County? His Excellency's support ought to be felt at the low grounds of the county.
This is to bring more harmony in this noble group of people in the society.

Baraza na wajane could be just one day moment, but has tremendous lifetime effects. There's a
need for collective caring. Kindness need not to be traded. Such humanitarian events should
not be a platform of buying votes but rather spreading the philanthropic philosophy of Ubuntu.
