Fear Grips Mamboleo as Armed Gang Terrorizes Residents

By Joel Clinton

Residents of Mamboleo in Kisumu County are living in fear after a series of violent robberies, allegedly carried out by a gang of armed young men dressed in police uniforms. The latest attack on the night of June 28 has increased calls for immediate action as families assess their losses and question the slow response from security forces.

Stephen Onyango, a resident of Obuolo, described the frightening experience when the gang invaded his home late at night. He said the attackers were heavily armed and moved from house to house, breaking down doors and damaging property before stealing valuables. “They took everything they could find. They stole our television, mobile phones, cash, and other household items. We felt helpless because they seemed organized and wore what looked like police uniforms,” Onyango said.

The rising crime has alarmed the community. Residents report that similar attacks have happened repeatedly over the past few weeks. The violence escalated tragically a few days earlier when a security guard was killed during a robbery at Shakila Gardens, leaving the community shaken.

Emily Atieno, another victim, criticized the local authorities’ response. She said residents have been left to protect themselves despite making numerous reports. “The area chief came after the incident but left without providing us any assurance. We no longer know who to trust because the robbers even wore police uniforms. We need action, not empty visits,” she lamented.

Residents also pointed to the poor state of roads in Obuolo and nearby areas, arguing that the conditions slow police response and discourage regular patrols. They stated that patrol vehicles are hardly seen, allowing criminals to operate with little opposition.

Attempts to get a response from the local Member of Parliament, Shakil Shabir, were unsuccessful by the time of publication.

However, the area chief acknowledged the rising crime and called for calm while investigations proceed.”We understand the fear and frustration among residents. We are working closely with the police to strengthen security patrols and investigate these incidents. I urge residents to keep reporting any suspicious activity as we pursue those responsible,” the chief said.

As fear spreads through Mamboleo, residents are urging the government and security agencies to increase police patrols, improve road conditions, and restore public confidence before more lives are lost. For many families, every night serves as a painful reminder that safety can no longer be taken for granted.
