Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has declared a firm zero-tolerance policy towards criminal gangs, initiating immediate security interventions across the county in response to recent acts of violence in public spaces. Following a pivotal County Security Committee meeting, Governor Nyong’o made it clear that criminal elements will not be permitted to disrupt the peace and development that Kisumu deserves.
“Criminal gangs will not be allowed to operate under my watch,” declared the Governor emphatically. “We must protect our people and ensure that every citizen can engage in public affairs without fear of intimidation.”
In outlining actionable measures the county administration will implement to combat this menace, Prof. Nyong’o pledged to enhance surveillance in crime hotspots and public facilities, improve street lighting to bolster night safety, establish village security committees to empower community policing, and execute a strict crackdown on criminal activities within the public transport sector, encompassing matatus, boda bodas, and tuk tuks.
This announcement comes on the heels of a shocking attack by armed individuals at Kisumu Social Hall during a mediation meeting concerning the Nyamasaria-Mowlem Satellite Bus Park. Residents have rallied behind the declaration, insisting that the real test lies in implementation.
In Kondele and Bandani, boda boda and tuk tuk operators voiced their concerns about the impact of insecurity on their livelihoods. “We support the crackdown, but it must target real criminals and not harass honest riders,” asserted Odhiambo Juma, a boda operator. “We also desperately need those promised street lights. Most robberies happen at night when it’s dark.”
Market traders in Migosi and Manyatta shared their experiences of extortion from gangs. “If these village committees are genuine and not just political tools, they can assist us in reporting these criminals. Right now, we are too afraid to speak out,” expressed Mama Alice Achieng, a local trader.
The Kisumu Residents’ Watch (KRW), a community-based organization monitoring governance and security, praised the Governor’s commitment but emphasized the necessity for rigorous safeguards. “We have heard similar proclamations before. What we seek now is action accompanied by transparency. Oversight of the village security committees and installation of streetlights in already identified areas are critical for enhancing security in our county,” said the KRW Executive Director.
“The crackdown must be lawful. Any extrajudicial actions will only exacerbate existing problems. Security and human rights must go hand in hand,” the Director added firmly.
County officials confirmed that the County Inspectorate will collaborate closely with the National Police Service to implement these measures immediately, prioritizing transport hubs, markets, and informal settlements. The time for empty promises has passed; it’s time for decisive action to secure Kisumu’s future.
