Calls for Police Accountability After a Journalist Was Shot While Covering Kenya Protests

By Lucy,

There are growing calls for police accountability following the shooting of K24 television
journalist Catherine Wanjeri during protests in Nakuru, Kenya. Wanjeri, who was
identifiable in a bright yellow shirt and vest marked “PRESS,” was shot three times in
the leg by Kenyan police while covering demonstrations against proposed tax
increases.
The incident occurred while Wanjeri reported on the unrest that swept across the
country. The protests, which began in response to the controversial tax hikes, have
seen widespread demonstrations and clashes with law enforcement. The shooting of
Wanjeri has intensified scrutiny of the police’s handling of the protests and raised
concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists.
Human rights organizations and media groups have condemned the attack, calling for a
thorough investigation. They argued that targeting journalists, meant to report on
events, impartially undermines democratic principles and the right to a free press.
The Kenyan government has yet to comment on the shooting. However, the incident
has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice. The calls for accountability
highlight the broader issues of police brutality and the need for reform to ensure the
protection of both journalists and civilians during times of unrest.
