Breaking the Silence: Bringing Endometriosis to Light to Empower Women Across the Globe

By: Jane Obila Beatrice
It is devastating to learn about the deaths of women and the health issues, like infertility, that
result from endometriosis. It is necessary to raise awareness of this illness.
The World Health Organization (WHO) describes endometriosis as an excruciating condition in
which tissue that resembles the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, resulting in inflammation.
According to the previously mentioned organization, the disease affects roughly 190 million
women worldwide who are of reproductive age. This indicates that more women and girls could
lose their lives if appropriate action is ignored.
Unaware that what is happening to her is a serious condition requiring medical attention, a
person may assume it is normal. For example, Mary Njambi Koikai, the late media personality
and reggae lover who passed away from endometriosis, disclosed that she was unaware she had
the disease because she believed menstrual pains were okay, which resulted in a delayed
diagnosis.
Early disease detection simplifies treatment and reduces overall medical costs. Early disease
detection increases the chance of an effective course of treatment, reducing overall healthcare
costs, according to the WHO. Information dissemination is essential because early detection can
preserve fertility and halt the disease's progression, leading to better outcomes.
It is crucial to carry out year-round campaigns to increase public awareness of endometriosis
symptoms like painful periods and ongoing pelvic pain. There is more than just waiting for
Endometriosis Awareness Month to accomplish this.
By sharing their experiences, survivors can empower others and debunk common
misconceptions about endometriosis. In addition to educating others, this will encourage
compassion and unity among those impacted by the disease.
We should spread awareness of endometriosis because it is a global illness to save the lives of all
of the lovely women and girls who live not only in our nation but all over the world.
