At least 50 Killed in Kenya Protests: Urgent Calls for Justice and Respect for Rights

By Lucy,
The protests in Kenya against the Finance Bill 2024 have led to the tragic deaths of 50
individuals, sparking urgent calls for justice and respect for human rights. From June
19-25, 2024, Kenyan citizens took to the streets to peacefully oppose the proposed tax
increases that would raise the prices of essential goods. However, the government’s
response was an excessive and disproportionate force from security forces.
Among the 50 people killed were human rights defenders, journalists, and ordinary
citizens exercising their right to peaceful assembly. This violent crackdown has drawn
widespread condemnation from the global civil society alliance CIVICUS and sixteen
partner organizations. They have decried the inhumane repression and are demanding
the immediate release of arrested activists, along with justice for those killed or injured
during the protests.
The excessive use of force by the security agencies has not only resulted in loss of life
but also leftover 100 people injured, highlighting the severe human rights violations that
occurred. CIVICUS and its partners emphasize that the right to peaceful assembly is
fundamental and must be protected. They stress that the Kenyan government’s actions
have undermined the rule of law and democratic governance.
The deaths of these protesters underscore the urgent need for the Kenyan government
to respect citizens’ rights and ensure that such tragedies do not recur. The international
community is watching Kenya’s response to this crisis, urging the government to uphold
human rights and democratic principles.
Addressing these grievances and ensuring accountability for the violence are crucial
steps toward restoring trust and demonstrating a commitment to democratic values.
