Growing Threats of Drug Abuse Among Youths

EMMANUEL KIPRUTO

Drug abuse among youths has become an increasing concern in many communities, affecting health, education, and social well-being. Young people are considered a vulnerable group due to factors such as peer pressure, unemployment, and exposure to substances at an early age. As a result, the issue has drawn attention from families, educators, and policymakers.

The main concern is the rising number of youths engaging in drug and substance abuse, which poses risks to their physical and mental health as well as their future productivity. Continued use of drugs among young people can lead to addiction, poor academic performance, and involvement in risky behaviors, creating long-term social and economic challenges.

According to reports from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, drug use among young people remains a global issue, with early exposure increasing the likelihood of long-term dependence. Additionally, the World Health Organization notes that substance abuse contributes to mental health disorders and other health complications among adolescents and young adults.

Concerns have also been raised at the local level, particularly in Chepseon Trading Centre. A businesswoman who is also a resident and a member of Youth Connect CBO shared her observations on the situation.

“Many young people around Chepseon Trading Centre are getting involved in drug use, and this is affecting both their lives and local businesses,” she said.

She added,

“As a community, we need to come together and guide the youth because the situation is becoming worrying.”

A male member of Youth Connect CBO also expressed similar concerns.

“We are seeing more cases of drug use among youths, and this is affecting their behaviours and future,” he noted.

“There is a need for more awareness programs and support systems to help young people avoid substance abuse,” he added.

Other stakeholders have also highlighted the need for continued intervention. One community member stated, “If this issue is not addressed early, it may have serious consequences for the future of our youth.” On the other hand, some officials emphasize that efforts are ongoing, with one noting, “There are programs in place to create awareness and support young people, but more collaboration is needed to achieve lasting results.”

While the rise in drug abuse among youths presents serious challenges, it is also recognized that addressing the issue requires a multi-sectoral approach involving families, schools, communities, and government institutions. Efforts such as awareness campaigns, counselling services, and policy enforcement may play a role in reducing the impact of substance abuse.

The future of young people will depend on how effectively this issue is addressed. Reducing drug abuse among youths could improve health outcomes, strengthen education systems, and contribute to overall community development.
