Yesterday will be remembered as one of the brightest and happiest days in Kisumu West Constituency. The long-awaited launch of the Last Mile Connectivity Project, led by the Cabinet Secretary for Energy Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, marked a turning point for thousands of residents who have lived in darkness and limited opportunity for years.
From early morning, excitement filled the air as villagers made their way to the venue. Children ran ahead while elders walked with renewed energy. Traders briefly closed their stalls, boda boda riders paused their errands, and young people gathered in lively groups; everyone was eager to witness a historic moment. When the CS arrived, the crowd erupted into cheers, shouts, and applause that echoed across the hills of Kisumu West.
In his speech, Hon. Wandayi described the project as “the beginning of a new era where no home, no school, and no business in Kisumu West will remain in the dark.” His words lifted the atmosphere even higher. People celebrated not just the electricity poles going up along their roads, but also what the light represented: safety, economic growth, and opportunity.
For residents, lighting the constituency means women can walk home safely after dark, shops can stay open longer, and local businesses—from welders to salons—can expand without relying on costly generators. More importantly, young people, who often feel left behind, now envision a future where they can start small businesses, study at night, and develop digital skills within their community.
The ceremony also featured a strong group of local leaders. Administrative officers, led by Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Jackson Oloo, stood proudly as the project unfolded. Members of the County Assembly—Hon. Jagongo (North West Ward), Hon. Dede (North Ward), and Hon. Zack Okoyo (Central Ward)—celebrated with the community, reaffirming their dedication to ongoing development in the constituency.
A new chapter had begun, one where darkness no longer defines the night and opportunity shines brighter than ever before.
