The Night Belongs to Thieves

By Alex Maina

In Kiplombe Ward, insecurity has become a serious concern. Residents say thefts and muggings have increased sharply, especially at night. People are now afraid to walk home at night. Many believe criminals hide in dark corners and wait for those returning from work to ambush and rob them.

A key hotspot is a road that connects West Market, LC Estate, and Mwanzo. Thieves use the darkness to their advantage. They snatch phones and bags from unsuspecting pedestrians, then quickly disappear into unlit areas. These attacks have become more frequent and more daring.

Other areas like Mwanzo and Kambi Karatasi have also reported increased cases of night-time break-ins and burglaries. Residents say these neighborhoods were once peaceful, but now they live in fear. Homes have been broken into, and valuable items stolen. The feeling of safety has faded.

Community members raised these concerns during two important public meetings. On 28th May, residents gathered in the LC Estate with the area Chief and village elders. They shared their experiences and demanded action. On 18th July, another security meeting took place at the Chief’s Office in Mwanzo. This time, the Chief, village elders, and the area MCA attended. The MCA assured residents that their concerns were valid and promised quick intervention.

It was evident from the meetings that the residents are calling for solutions. They want bright security lights installed across key roads and paths. Lighting up the dark areas will take away hiding spots for criminals. Residents also want more police patrols at night. They’re asking Kamkunji, Baharini, and Central Police Stations to increase their presence and respond faster to incidents.

Frequent patrols and better lighting will help reduce crime and restore peace. Residents believe that a strong police presence will make criminals think twice. They also want local leaders to continue listening and working with the community.

Amid the rising crime rates, residents of Mwanzo, West, LC,  and Kambi Karatasi are asking for real solutions, not empty promises. They refuse to accept fear as part of their daily lives and are calling on the authorities to act now to restore safety in the area.
