The Long-Awaited Expansion of Kibuye Market is Here

By Joel Clinton

Kibuye Market is the heart of Kisumu County’s trade and culture. It is one of the largest and busiest open-air markets in Kenya. Every Sunday, thousands of traders and buyers come from all over the country. The market turns into a lively place filled with color, sound, and activity. It offers everything from fresh farm produce like vegetables, grains, and fruits to manufactured goods such as clothes, electronics, and household items, all under one roof.

However, this high level of activity also leads to significant congestion. The market was designed decades ago and has outgrown its capacity. On market days, the space inside becomes too cramped for the growing number of traders. Many end up displaying their goods along the surrounding access roads. This creates a chaotic scene where vehicles struggle to pass, and pedestrians must navigate narrow gaps between stalls.

To tackle this issue, the government, through the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project Phase II (KISIP II), has recently started a major project to build new access roads around Kibuye Market. The goal is to improve traffic flow, accessibility, and safety for both traders and customers. Construction work has already begun, with heavy machinery and crews clearing paths and laying down new road foundations.

Many traders see this project as a welcome relief. Mary Atieno, a vegetable vendor who has worked in the market for over fifteen years, said, “If these roads are completed well, business will be easier. Customers will drive in and out without struggle.” However, some remain skeptical. Certain traders doubt the quality of materials being used and whether the roads will hold up under constant heavy use and harsh weather. “We’ve seen many projects start well and end up with poor results. We just hope this one lasts,” said another trader.

Despite these mixed feelings, there is a common sense of optimism. The project represents progress and a renewed effort to restore order in one of the region’s most important economic centers. As Kibuye Market continues to grow, there is hope that the new infrastructure will match its energy. This can help ensure that trade thrives in a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment for generations to come.
