The Clash Of Wills

By Frank Bray.

Humanity has its simplicities and complexities in a measured blend that just won’t allow everyone to agree on everything all at the same time everywhere and always. It kind of makes the world both an interesting place and a complicated place. Of course we won’t all agree on what to make out of this and that just proves the point.

To manage the scope of our diversities we came up with a basic foundational structures for our interactions so as to keep the general well being and sanity. Whether by a concensus or trial and error, the general agreements stand and for them to be honored we get ourselves custodians. And hence we can rest well knowing that our well being is secure. The sweet spot of this arrangement is that no one is technically expected to make general decisions beyond the confines of the written code as per jurisdiction.

But there’s a breed of individuals who well within their natural inclination are just bound to disagree with the initial set code. Whether for good or evil it depends. However, the evil crafty ones tend to be so proactive and will usually push the bounds as far as they can without it backfiring on them. Let’s say they like to play with limits, testing them as per findings. If let alone they can enslave the rest. But still men disagree so on goes the war for dominion.

It’s actually quite astounding how societies manage to keep any two warring ideologies in balance. Still at times the scales tip and one side overwhelms the other. It is only usually unfortunate when the destructive side tips the scale. It therefore makes sense that the majority of people should be able to decide their terms of co-existence hence democracy.

But democracy in our land faces it’s own perils. In one way or another someone pelts it with a stone of compromise but still it survives to see tomorrow. Yet it’s no laughing matter that an individual or small fraction of the population would impose it’s own norms without the courtesy of reasonable agreement with the rest. It’s a breach of community and co – existence.

Right now there’s the risk of imposition of individualistic will on the greater folk. A ploy to infringe on general consensus on parameters of co-existence but vigilance against such seems near in the battlefield and it’s keeping the scale from toppling wrong. Some people seem to wish to include silence on infringement of rights in the general unspoken code of ethics but thankfully it’s a vain attempt so far.

Fortunately the world is little and large all at once thanks to the internet. Now a breach of democratic concensus in one area is an open book for everyone’s review. I guess the world has tipped over so that although once we were clusters of different variables on life’s terrain, now we can be one consequential variable if we choose to be. When we say move, we can all hear the call and if it suits us we move. But better yet, we seem to currently be united in a common cause – to tip the scales to the weight of the general well being.
