SECURITY STARTS WITH YOU

By Alex Maina

The people of Kapchumba, Kambi Thomas On 12th September 2024 gathered at the Kilimani Chief’s Office to talk about security. The meeting was led by the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) of Turbo Sub-County, Mr. Hassan Mahmoud. Many residents had shared that insecurity in the area is growing. They said they were worried and wanted something to be done.

In recent weeks, several break-ins have been reported in different parts of Kapchumba area and the lower parts of Kiplombe. Residents say thieves have been targeting homes and small businesses, mostly at night. Others have reported cases of phone snatchings, especially in the evenings as people return from work.

Boda boda riders have also been affected. They spoke about how they are being targeted and attacked, especially when working late. One rider, Bony, who operates along the Maili Nne–Roadblock–Kapchumba–Kiplombe route, said that a month ago, a fellow rider was attacked in the area and his motorbike stolen. The rider was badly injured, and the incident left many other boda boda riders scared to work past dark.

The DCC listened to these concerns and gave a clear and strong message:

“Security starts with you.”

He reminded the people that while the police are ready to help, the community must also take responsibility. The police cannot be everywhere at once, but when people report what they see and work together, the police can respond better and faster. “If you see something wrong, speak up. If you hear something strange, report it. When we all work together, the area becomes safer for everyone,” said Mr. Mahmoud.

He encouraged the community to support Nyumba Kumi and form neighborhood watch groups. He also urged boda boda riders to escort each other when working late, saying,

“Unity is power. Work in groups so you can overpower thieves. The people who steal from us do not come from far they live among us. Don’t be afraid. Just report and help the police when needed.”

The Chief of Kilimani, Madam Gladys, who was also present, asked the youth to choose peace and avoid crime. She reminded everyone that a safer future starts with the choices made today.

Many residents committed to being more active in community safety efforts. Others called for more such forums where they can freely speak and share ideas with local leaders.
