The residents of Kameta in Nyalenda A ward, Kisumu County, are raising concerns with the County Government of Kisumu over the unfortunate state of the Lagoon-Edom Oloo Major road, which is supposed to link Nyamasaria and Nyalenda with the Nairobi Road. The project was already budgeted for in the County’s budget, according to the devastated residents, who are demanding explanations for the delays from the County Government of Kisumu and the Kisumu City management, who were given overall responsibility for the repair and maintenance of the Major road.
Residents of Kameta are facing difficulties travelling due to the pitted and bumpy road, which lacks proper drainage. These factors have a greater impact on motorists who use the road.
“This road has been in this condition for the longest time, and as a motorist riding a motorcycle on this route from the Kasagam Police Station to Nyamasaria, I face numerous challenges, including uneven tyre wear and wheel misalignment, which lead to costly replacements. We also suffer a lot during the rainy seasons, as the potholes increase rapidly, affecting the natural drainage of the road and thus increasing the chances of accidents. We have a school in this area, St. Joseph Kisumu Secondary School, which suffers immensely from this damaged road. Even during the National Examinations, the movement of exam materials and staff to and from the school becomes hectic, with the school’s demographic position contributing to its poor condition. Despite all the challenges, the road is further damaged by large vehicles that enter the Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company Limited (KIWASCO) Nyalenda Oxidation pond, adding to the damage and making movement more difficult,” said Ronny Onindo.
The residents added that the entire project is the responsibility of the Kisumu City manager, Mr. Abala Wanga, who has yet to explain the situation. They urged the County Assembly of Kisumu to summon the Kisumu City manager for a special sitting.
“The issues surrounding this project can only be explained to our people by the Kisumu City manager, as the overseer of the project. We ask him to respond to our predicaments. We also call on the County Assembly of Kisumu to summon the City manager to a special sitting concerning a series of stalled projects that are under the city management’s supervision, not only here in Nyalenda but throughout Kisumu City,” added Paul Masiga regarding the stalled project.
