On 7th October 2025, Kisumu took another bold step toward modernization. Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, along with NSSF CEO David Koross, officially launched the construction of 164 modern housing units at Milimani Estate. This multimillion-shilling project marks a significant milestone in the county’s ambitious urban regeneration plan. It aims to transform Kisumu and improve living standards for its residents.
The project is a joint effort between the County Government of Kisumu and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). It will include 102 two-bedroom apartments and 62 three-bedroom apartments, each with domestic staff quarters. The nine-floor buildings will offer a new standard of urban living and symbolize Kisumu’s growth into a model modern city.
Governor Nyong’o praised the partnership as a vision realized through the county’s long-term urban renewal strategy. “This project represents the Kisumu of the future, which is clean, organized, and sustainable. We are replacing old estates with modern, eco-friendly homes and creating jobs for our youth,” he said.
True to his words, the project has already sparked hope among local youth. Many young people in Kisumu view the ongoing construction as a chance for much-needed job opportunities. “We are hopeful that the Milimani project and others like it will provide us with work and help us earn a living,” said Brian Otieno, a 24-year-old mason from Nyalenda.
The project is expected to bring new energy to Kisumu’s economy. Workers, suppliers, transporters, and local food vendors around the sites will benefit from the economic activity. According to NSSF CEO David Koross, the initiative addresses housing needs while promoting social welfare and economic empowerment.
Similar regeneration projects are in progress in Lumumba, Makasembo, Anderson, and Mosque estates. More developments are planned in Kibuye, Arina, Kaloleni, and Obunga. These initiatives are part of the county’s broader plan to replace rundown housing with modern, sustainable, and dignified living spaces for all residents.
As Kisumu’s skyline begins to change, the promise of transformation is clear. The Milimani housing project stands as a sign of progress, combining modern infrastructure with social inclusion, job creation, and urban pride. Kisumu is steadily becoming the model modern city of the lakeside region.
