Kisumu’s First-Ever Lighthouse Rises at the Marine Rescue Centre

By Joel Clinton

Kisumu City is undergoing a major transformation along the shores of Lake Victoria with the construction of its first lighthouse. This landmark is expected to change safety, navigation, and tourism in the area. The lighthouse, located at the new Kisumu Marine Rescue Centre, stands where Lwa’ngni Beach used to be. It symbolizes progress and modernization.

The red-and-white structure is visible from a distance and is designed to guide water vessels, especially in low visibility conditions. Fishermen, tour boat operators, and rescue teams have faced challenges from fog, darkness, and unpredictable weather on the lake. The new lighthouse aims to address this issue by providing a dependable point of reference, which will improve orientation on Lake Victoria.

Construction around the site is in full swing. Workers are laying foundations, building support structures, and preparing the grounds for additional facilities that will support the lighthouse. The Marine Rescue Centre will also house emergency response teams, rescue boats, and safety equipment, improving safety on the lake for residents and visitors alike.

Local observers are enthusiastic about the project, calling it a game-changer for the development of Kisumu’s waterfront. For years, the city has been working to become a regional tourism and maritime hub, with projects such as revitalizing Kisumu Port, improving passenger ferry services, and expanding Lakefront Park. The lighthouse will be part of this vision, adding beauty while enhancing navigation safety.

Residents familiar with the old Lwa’ngni Beach note the significant change happening. What was once a simple lakeside spot is now evolving into a well-organized marine centre with modern architecture, better security, and new economic opportunities. Small businesses, tour guides, and hospitality operators are optimistic that the lighthouse will attract more tourists and improve local livelihoods.

As construction progresses, the lighthouse has already started to attract attention on social media, with many celebrating it as an important milestone for Kisumu City. When finished, the structure will not only light up Lake Victoria but also represent Kisumu’s growing ambition, resilience, and dedication to developing a safer, smarter waterfront.
