A day without a play?

By The Great Imboywa Michael

An idle mind is a devil’s workshop. As the long school holidays are set to begin, Students should be involved in many activities to keep them busy, lest we will lose them to drugs and early pregnancies. Hence, everyone is pulling their strings to make sure they are doing their part.

However, this is not the case here in Kamkunji grounds, Eldoret. The Ministry of Housing, under affordable housing, has decided to make the Kamkunji grounds and other residential areas its dumping site.

Kamkunji grounds has been widely used for important football matches, training, and events has which have been contaminated by and remain from the ongoing affordable housing construction on Kilimani-Kidiwa phase.

The trash contains rusted irons, nails, broken glasses, and big immovable rocks, which are not only a serious health hazard but also an obstacle to the activities that should be happening on Kamkunji grounds.

As you pass there, the field that was once vibrant and full of dreams and talents is now littered with heaps of trash and mud, the silence and hopelessness are loud, and all the dreams are now on the verge of despair.

The efforts of young people protesting for the removal of the trash have been ignored, as no attempts have been made. How can the government be so careless, does it mean that it cares about no one other than itself?

As the government is on the run to meet its promises to the citizens, affordable housing — being one of the top and most pushed agendas — should not become a nuisance. Yes, the project is creating jobs for hundreds of people. Okay, fine — it will enhance housing and improve the economy, but…The ongoing construction in Kilimani, Kidiwa/West Phase, is becoming a pinch in the skin as they are now disposing trash from the site into residential areas and schools — even worse, into the field where youths hold and play their matches.

This is a serious health hazard. Can’t they just afford a proper place to take their trash instead of posing a danger to where our kids play daily?

By disposing of this trash, they are not only denying our kids their rights but also harming the environment. The Department of Health and Environment, County government, needs to look into this — I believe no problem lacks a solution if proper minds are engaged. They should afford where to dump the there trash, Afford-hapo au sio, just like they are affording Affordable housing.
