On 7th August 2026, residents of Kambi Thomas gathered at the Chief’s Office for the Writafrica community baraza to discuss issues affecting their area. Among the emerging concerns was the lack of working street lights in different parts of the community.
Residents said that darkness was making it difficult and unsafe for people to move around at night. Nekesa Sarah was one of the residents who raised the issue. She explained that the lack of security lights had increased fear among residents.
“Hakuna security lights. Unapigwa kofi na jirani lakini hata huwezi jua ni nani juu ya giza yenye iko. Huwezi enda kwa duka saa moja juu ya uwoga na giza yenye iko,” she said.
Her concern showed how darkness can make residents feel unsafe even when moving around their own neighbourhood. She said that some people are afraid to go to nearby shops at night because they cannot clearly see who is around them.
Another resident, Daisy Prudence, also raised concern about the situation at an area known as the Dip. She said that there were no street lights in the area, making it dangerous for people to pass through after dark.
“Apo kwa Dip hakuna street lights na it is very dangerous to pass when it becomes dark,” she said.
Evans Mulari from Mwanzo SEC CBO also spoke about the condition of the street lights. He explained that some street lights had already been installed but were not working properly.
“Mwanzo street lights iliwekwa haifanyi kazi vizuri, inawaka mchana na usiku inazima. Waatundie hii streetlight,” he said.
The community leaders said they would follow up on the matter with the relevant authorities. Kevin Mulweye Kibore from Buda CBO and Evans Mulari from Mwanzo SEC CBO said that street lighting is an important issue that should be addressed.
The area MCA explained that the street lights had already been included in the budget and therefore needed proper follow-up. He said the he the Area Member of County Assembly and the Ward Administrator will also be involved in ensuring that the project is completed and the existing lights are repaired.
The leaders committed themselves to working with the community and following up on the issue until a solution is found. Residents hoped that functional street lights would improve security and make it safer for people to move around Kambi Thomas at night.
