Residents of Mile 4–Chepseon celebrated the completion and tarmacking of a road that had long been a source of concern due to its poor condition. For years, the road had posed serious risks to users, with potholes, dust, and rough surfaces contributing to frequent accidents and, in some cases, loss of lives. Ideally, roads are meant to ensure safe and smooth transportation; however, the state of the Mile 4–Chepseon road had previously made travel difficult and dangerous. The completion of the tarmacked road therefore marked a significant improvement in safety and accessibility for the community.
A boda-boda rider, Peter Kiprotich, who frequently used the road, explained that the route had been dangerous for daily operations. He said that the poor condition of the road had made it difficult to transport passengers safely, especially during rainy seasons when accidents were common. He noted that riders often faced high repair costs for their motorcycles due to the rough terrain and expressed relief that the road had finally been improved.
Similarly, a resident named Mary Chebet, who regularly used the road to access Chepseon Market, shared her experience. She explained that the road had previously made it hard for her to transport goods to the market, especially during wet weather when it became muddy and slippery. According to her, many traders had suffered losses because transport was unreliable and costly. She expressed happiness that movement to the market had now become easier and safer. From the people of the area they are happy to have been helped economically from the project.
The project was supported by a community-based organization known as Youth Connect, which played a key role in advocating for the road’s improvement. The organization became more active after a tragic incident in which the road claimed the life of a teacher, an event that deeply shocked the community and led to protests and strikes demanding urgent action from authorities. Speaking during the celebration, Dennis, a representative of Youth Connect, acknowledged the challenges the community had faced and the importance of the completed project. He stated, “This road had become a danger to many people, and we are grateful to see it finally completed. It will now serve the community safely and support development in this area.” His remarks reflected the organization’s commitment to addressing local challenges through community involvement and advocacy.
Talking with the ward administrator of chepseon ward he had a lot to express about the road he stated that road maintenance had restored peace not only in the government offices but also to the community. He added that the road now has become more efficient to the traders and also has become a way of increasing the number of taxpayers going to the market and thus earning revenue to the county government thus enabling it to run other sectors without straining much on the finances
From a broader perspective, community organizations and development stakeholders often emphasize the importance of infrastructure in improving livelihoods and ensuring safety. Poor road conditions are widely associated with increased accident risks, delays in emergency response, and economic setbacks. In this case, the completion of the Mile 4–Chepseon road demonstrated how collaboration between communities and organizations can lead to meaningful change. Such projects not only enhance safety but also promote economic growth and social well-being.
The transformation of the Mile 4–Chepseon road from a dangerous route into a safe, tarmacked road highlighted the importance of timely infrastructure development and community advocacy, which ultimately explained why residents came together to celebrate its completion.
